About Us

Wood has been our business since way back in the 1930's

Kife Thompson started logging in Koochiching County way back in the '30s. Things were difficult in those days, but hard work and integrity were the road to success then just as much as they are now. Continuing the association with the woods products businesses, Kife started a sawmill in the late '30s. After learning the business from the woods to the mill, Kife decided to get into the retailing of lumber and construction.

On August 1, 1939 at about 11 am

Northern Lumber Company opened. The original location was at the corner of Highway 53 and 11th Street. The business has survived depression, war, fire, booms, busts and recession. Today it is going strong, a tribute to the principles of giving good value and good service. A family business, Richard, Robert, Clifford Jr. and Kathleen are dedicated to these principles. Third generation Thompsons, Ryan, Scott and Brooke, are proud to be a part of our business.

The lumber business is a great tradition

It has been a part of the county and country since our community was formed. We're proud of our past and look to the future with enthusiasm and optimism. There's a lot of people at Northern Lumber working to keep the area vibrant.

Northern Lumber is a member of the Northwestern Lumber Association and recipient of the Do It Best Corporation's Purchase Award since 1999.
